LA Movie Review- The Way, Way Back

This is a coming of age story about A shy teenager who is forced to spend the summer with his mother & her boyfriend at the beach. He finds solace with his job at the local water park & with it's charismatic owner. This charming story is written from the heart according to the directors, one of whom the story is based on. The lead actor Liam James delivers a very withdrawn, reserved performance as Duncan, a teenager with confidence issues. Steve Carell leaves his comfort zone & plays the mother's boyfriend, who happens to be a real jerk. He does a good job making you dislike him the entire movie. Sam Rockwell is the best part of every movie he's in & this is no exception. He's funny, understanding, & a source of guidance for Duncan. This had some very good casting because acting is good all around. This is a well written, well directed family drama/comedy that doesn't disappoint. The Way, Way Back is a very good movie that tackles the issues of growing up, conformity, & being yourself.
4/5
