LA Movie Review- The Purge

A family tries to survive the night when murder becomes sanctioned; meanwhile a homicidal gang breaks into their home in search of a man that the family has harbored. Hostage meets Die Hard in this suspenseful film. The concept itself is the most interesting aspect. The idea that the country has broken itself to the point where it needs a purge. Or possibly as a way to further the 99 vs the 1%. It is thought provoking. But it never truly is very scary, although it does build suspense & deliver plenty of action-terror in the second half. It is in that second half where a lot of screenplay problems pop up. Stupid things that character do bog down the movie. Acting wise, Ethan Hawke should make more suspense films because he's great in them. The main antagonist is disturbing through self-belief in the purge, so props to Rhys Wakefield for portraying that through his character. The rest of the acting is well done. Overall The Purge is an enjoyable time at the theater, but it isn't the scare film it promised. Perhaps Insidious Chapter 2 or The Conjuring will fulfill those needs later this year.
3.3/5
