LA Movie Review- The Butler

Forest Whittaker stars as Cecil Gaines, a white house butler who served 8 presidents. This is basically an attempt to be Forrest Gump with Forest Whittaker. This is a solid cable movie which is boosted up by Forest Whittaker's performance. It is bloated & feels like a music video at times. It seems like the writer attempted to cram in as many civil rights moments as possible. The writing is poor at times & the directing is alright at best. The man can't seem to hold a camera steady. Whittaker stands out & above & shows subtle restraint as an actor. Although a nomination is probably a long shot. Oprah Winrey was good in her role but she seems more like a novelty act to entice audiences for the movie other than anything else. This movie could have been cut a lot shorter. Certain scenes just aren't necessary & don't add to the story. While this movie suffers from much, Whittaker's performance delivers so much so in the second half that he elevates the film to a different level.
3.5/5
