LA Movie Review- Ender's Game

In the distant future the human race emerges victorious when Earth is attacked by aliens. Fearful that the aliens will return, a military program is set up to train teenagers to fight the extra terrestrial threat should they ever return. Gavin Hood directs this science fiction movie that is much deeper & much better than expected. He had a very unique vision for the movie, filling it with big ideas & interesting visual effects. The film isn't really a kids movie as it has surprisingly dark turns & fascinating discussions of morality. The writing is the best part & the biggest problem. There is much great dialogue but some of the younger actors aren't able to carry it. The film has a lot of big ideas about ethics & the worth of a soldier. The film also conveys themes of genocide, terrorism, & the cost of the greater good. The biggest question the film asks is how far is too far & when is too far necessary. Asa Butterfield was great as Ender, conveying a relatable & complex performance. Harrison Ford returns to space & is awesome in a supporting role as a colonel training Ender. Viola Davis is great in the movie, as is a very effective Ben Kingsley. The cinematographer made the film feel like a roller coaster ride & give it a unique look. The score plays very well in the film, making action scenes especially engaging. This is a very unique film with big ideas, unique visuals, & a unique story.
4/5
